The Crescent Moon

Several Nawawi Center volunteers were interviewed in this beautifully photographed feature book that explored the face of asian immigrants, mostly muslims, in New Zealand.  Its authors were invited to our youth camp and homes.

She and Westra travelled the length of the country photographing and speaking to Muslims who shared their stories, creating a reflection of the community. The project began with a trip to Christchurch, where both she and Westra attended a Muslim youth retreat, the Nawawi Centre, which was established to promote understanding of the faith.

“It was very similar to any young persons’ retreat.  It was a good introduction to a lot of issues.”

Jansen says New Zealanders are often confused about culture and Islam. “Many people do not understand that Muslims come from such a range of vastly different cultures.”
